here. Please note that the WRG2 tire is not classified as a Load Range C tire but we consider it appropriate for the Vanagon. VW found certain tires to be acceptable for Vanagons as long as they met specific conditions, so when considering non-Load Range C tires it does require scratching below the surface. First, this 205/70/15 tire carries the XL designation for extra load - more specifically this means that the bead and bead area have been reinforced to allow for use of higher PSI than normal passenger car tires, thus allowing more weight carrying capacity. Second, in the same vein, maximum pressure for these tires is 51 lbs. Tires that can be inflated to higher levels will be firmer and more stable. Although VW has recommended some tires that are lower, we like to see max tire pressure at 50 or above. Third, this tire has a load index of 100 which designates up to 1764 lbs maximum load per wheel at max psi. VW recommends tires that carry a minimum of 1580 lbs, but since this is not a Load range C tire, the NHTSA in its DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards state that when using a non-load range C tire in a light duty truck application you reduce tire load capacity by 9%. Reducing the 1764 lbs by the 9% rule still leaves 1605 lbs, still above the required 1580lbs. Why consider this tire? It is very quiet and long lasting for an all season tire. It is very affordable and has positive ratings and customer reviews. I know that you have likely done your share of research on the internet about tires for Vanagons. We are right there with you.
